Our Mission
Safe Spaces Organization is a grassroots Community Based Organization (CBO) that educates, engages and empowers marginalized urban girls and young women in the Eastland slums of Nairobi, Kenya.
Our mission: Provide a “safe space” where girls can pursue their future. Enable girls to get an education, learn a trade, practice sports (basketball), learn life-skills, reproductive health and hygiene. Help girls develop resilience and self-sufficiency.
Our Goal: Build a stronger generation of women with independent minds who:
Define their ambitions
Become leaders in the community
Drive sustainable development and change
Our Mottos: empower girls to change lives.
“I’m the change” - Each girl learns she has the power to lead her own life and achieve her dreams
“Each one, teach one” - Girls learn to spread knowledge and become community leaders
Population Served: Our education, sports, life-skills and reproductive health programs annually serve more than 1200 girls, aged 5-22, and their mothers.
Safe Spaces Social Enterprises seek to create and model self-reliance. They build community and spread learning. They demonstrate the values and mottos that Safe Spaces teaches.
The social enterprise projects are designed to bring funding, skills and support to the community-based organization’s programs in order to create stability and continuity for the organization. At the same time, they seek to uplift the Mathare community; providing opportunity and hope in the midst of the harsh slum environment. Projects are chosen with care, focusing on critical needs such as food, water and clothing.
They show how to “be the change”.
